Biofeedback

"I consider this to be the most creative use of biofeedback I have seen since it's inception in the 1960's!" --David Shapiro, Ph.D., Professor of Psychology, UCLA Neuropsychiatric Institute.

Biofeedback is a method to measure stress levels in one's body in a very elite and microscopic manner. It will measure muscle tension, for example, at such low levels that it cannot measured in any other manner. Biofeedback can assess hand temperature, and you can learn to warm your hands, so you can learn to control your hand temperature and perform with warm hands. You can teach your students to do the same. There are also other elite measurements you can learn to understand and perform with biofeedback, and all while you learn to truly understand the mind/body connection. No more misunderstanding, because with the training you receive, you also receive a full understanding of how the mind and body work together. How else can you understand the biofeedback?

Biofeedback was originally developed in the 1960's from study with Buddhist Monks. The developers were fascinated about how the Monks could slow their heart rate so much at will, and do other things that were considered to be outside of human control. Heart rate, for example, was not supposed to be alterable by conscious will. Nor was hand temperature, or other functions. However, the Monks were doing these elite things, so the original founders of biofeedback developed this system so we all could learn to alter the same body systems the Monks could. Today, we have learned to alter them and we have developed applications for many things above and beyond anything the Monks needed or thought of.

The essence of biofeedback is simple. Have you ever had a fever and someone took your temperature? Of course you have. That is biofeedback--the thermometer was the biofeedback instrument, giving you the feedback of what your body temperature was. That's how it works, only you use electrodes instead of sticking something inside your mouth. Are you allergic to latex? There are latex-sensitive electrodes for you. Electrodes pick up the body signals, send them to a small box, then the box transforms them and sends them on to a computer which analyzes them and displays the signal on the screen for you to see. You then can modify that signal--such as muscle tension, hand temperature, heart rate, etc., by looking at the signal and trying different things (relaxing, doing deep breathing, etc.) to change the signal. The "feedback signal" tells you how you are doing, and does so much better than you can tell any other way.
